If you have memories of the old L.S. Ayres department store in downtown Indianapolis, this coffee table volume is nothing short of a treasure. The Indiana Historical Society Press and Kenneth Turchi knocked themselves out on this one offering a solid history of the company synonymous with Indianapolis along with fantastic photos of a bygone era.
Like many, I did have the experience of shopping at the famed L.S. Ayres department store with my mother when I was younger and eating my “hobo” lunch in the Tea Room, but I had no idea what all that store carried back in the “old days” and that is what made this book so much fun! Though this book will have limited appeal, if you do have a love of local history, this one is a must have and at $29.95 is affordable. I am looking forward to meting Turchi this year at the Author’s Fair and having him sign my copy. Buy It!
